Going Green Part 5: Cloth Pads!

I started to learn about cloth pads through cloth diapers. As cloth diapers are the more natural way to diaper your child, cloth pads are the natural way for us women to take care of ourselves.

I remember when i was a teenager (guess how long ago that was!) i was taught by my girl friends to wash my disposable pads before throwing them in the bin. This is done for both hygiene and spiritual purposes. I have done that since. So when i first heard of cloth pads- reuseable, washable pads- i thought it made sense! Yes, it makes more sense to wash your pads if they are to be reused rather than be thrown away.

I know some of us would squirm at the thought of washing our pads. What is there to be disgusted of? After all, it's our own blood, a product of our own normal physiologically functioning organs! Well at least that's how i see it.

How reliable are cloth pads? I would say, as reliable as disposable ones. Come on, who never leaked on disposables? Everybody does once in a while. Which is what you would expect from cloth pads too. But modern cloth pads are not just a piece of scrap cloth you fold and wear like in the old days. They are made with layers of good quality cotton (mostly used material), with a soft inner, a hidden waterproof yet breathable layer, backed by beautiful prints on the outside. They are simply gorgeous! But most importantly, they are SAFE.

Cloth pads are made of natural, non toxic material- just like the clothes we wear. They do not contain harmful chemicals which can potentially sip through the skin and can be hazardous to our health. Why do we hear more of cancers, fibroids and other gynaecological problems in the modern days? It's because of our lifestyle- not just the food we eat but also how far we are drifting away from our nature.

Care for cloth pads couldn't be easier. If you're changing while away from home, fold it and keep it in a sealed wetbag till you get home. It wouldn't smell. When normal menstrual blood comes into contact with a cloth pad, nothing happens. But when blood comes into contact with the chemicals contained inside a disposable pad, it reacts- and that's where all the smell is coming from! Imagine what it does when it's in contact with your skin & organs? God forbid! Anyway, chuck them into a pail when you get home, with a little detergent (the same one you'd be using for your cloth diapers- basicly no bleach, no softeners and no enzymes). Rinse it while you're showering and line dry preferably in the sun (sun is a natural bleach and antibacterial- cheap aye?). And don't worry about what the neighbours might say- most would say how pretty my 'hankies' are!

I have been using cloth pads since the past few months, after i'm convinced it is the best for my health (not to mention how much i could save- you do the calculations- i'm sure you're better than me at maths). And what is good for me, i recommend to my friends :)

    • Izam Suziani Ya Allah, kak Mahya MTarip, saya ni grad oversea, ada contract 10 tahun, keje gov 8y 7m, amik pencen. Kerja sgt berdedikasi. Tak pernah terfikir nak tinggalkan the service langsung. Mmg byk berkorban demi parkhidmatan pd pesakit2 saya. Family is always second. Tapi bila saya dah di-push to my limit, saya nekad tinggalkan semuanya. Resign 24 hours lagi! Bayar sebulan gaji saya lagi (ermm banyak tu). Walaupun saya 'rugi' dlm byk aspek, tapi bagi saya sayalah org paling untung di dunia ni! Duit boleh cari (for the first time saya bersyukur sgt saya ni keje sbg doktor! Kalau tak selama ni asyik nyesal je rasanya). Rezeki Allah ada dimana2. At least skrg ni saya happy, family happy, kalau saya keje kuat, duit masuk, puas hati. Kalaula saya skrg ni keje sekuat saya keje kat gov dulu, saya mmg dah kaya raya. But it's not all about the money! Bila kita buat demi Allah, insyaAllah the reward is super sweet!

    • Ayu Khairy salam Izam Suziani, situasi kita hampir sama..saya juga berhenti dengan notis 24 jam ..baru je berlaku 3 minggu yg lalu walhal saya baru je join firm tu dalam sebulan lebih..sebelum saya join firm tu, saya kerja dengan firm lain selama 7 tahun..memang offer dari firm tu tinggi, tapi sebabkan ada beberapa benda yang saya tak boleh nak terima (sebab masa interview lain, masa dah kerja lain la plak), saya rasa tak sanggup dah nak kerja dgn suasana macam tu..dan Alhamdulillah, suami amat la menyokong hasrat saya..time tu dalam fikiran saya 2 je..samada cari kerja lain atau buat biz. so, sebab suami saya mmg bekerja berkaitan dgn usahawan2 ni, maka, dia la galakkan buat biz kecil2an dulu...saya harap juga ia satu keputusan yg tepat ..semoga kita sama2 berjaya ye.. btw, saya tak pergi seminar irfan khairi tu sabtu ni sebab saya pergi seminar Intensive Advances Fesbuk Power 2012..saya harap pelaburan ini berbaloi ^_^

    • Lily Maznah Muas Tahniah Izam Suziani atas penghijrahan anda.
"Your career can wait, but your children cannot".

    • Ummuaunyadny Ismail Tahniah...i feel u! semoga kita ditetapkan niat dan dimudahkan urusan walau apapun cabaran yg menanti dunia W/SAHM...Aameen

Happiness is...

It's been a week since i left my old job for 8+ years. I still can't get used to not being worried all the time yet! I'm still constantly thinking, worrying and trying to find something to do all the time *it's not easy being an adrenaline junkie*

At the same time, I'm trying to get used to my new role as a self-employed doctor, a full time mom when i wish, and a Work At Home Mom. I find myself still struggling to make ends meet. Time management is the skill i really need to master now!

The best thing about my life now is that I am in control! Fully. Freedom- it is the best feeling ever.

One thing for sure, I am the happiest person on earth now!

Malaysian Cloth Diapering Parents: I want to win Babywearing Gear for Great Cloth Diaper Change Malaysia 2012 Contest

I Want to Win Babywearing Gear for Great Cloth Diaper Change Malaysia 2012 Contest

My cloth diapering story

Cloth diapers- I haven't known anything about it until around a year ago, while I was pregnant with my fourth child. It was love at first sight. Many people thought I was crazy, many more laughed at me when I spoke about it. Some even blamed it on the pregnancy hormones!

Did all of that stop me from cloth diapering my children?- NOT A BIT!

You see, there are many things about cloth diapering that people just don't get. I'll tell you some of it, from my own perspective:

  1. These are not old fashioned cloth diapers- although I have nothing against the old fashion way our grandmothers do it, I have to stress that nowadays, cloth diapers have been 'modernized'. Gone all the sloppy knots, the plastic wraps and the difficulty that comes with it. Now, cloth diapers has gone through a revolution- where technology in textile meets modern sofistication! You'll have to see it to believe it.
  2. Cloth diapers are the healthier choice for your baby- It's appauling to know that many people are unaware of the toxins contained in disposable diapers (I'm not gonna name them, you can just google them when you're free). Imagine having these toxins seep under your little one's skin into his/her blood stream *don't wanna imagine*. And the skin is the largest organ in the human body *yikes!*
  3. It can be cost effective in the long run (as long as you don't hoard!)- Yes, many people cringe by the price of a single piece of cloth diaper. RM20-80 for a piece? How's that gonna be cheap? All I have to say back to them is "Hey brother! Do your calculations lah!". Besides, what's wrong with spending just a little more for a good cause?
  4. It's better for the earth- *sigh* It's just so sad seeing people who just don't give a damn about the earth and pollute as they wish. I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's not that easy to take a breath of fresh air anymore nowadays. The air just stinks most of the time. Many people don't want to make it their resposibility to keep the earth clean, instead, they depend on other people to do it for them. Disposable diapers take ages (some say up to 500 years) to decompose on its own. Imagine all the rubbish we are throwing everyday- this contributes to growth of bacteria & other organisms which get spread though our air and water. We are just making our family and ourselves sicker by the day :(
  5. It draws you closer to your little ones- This i must admit- I have never felt more like a mom (eventhough I have 4 kids now!), until I started cloth diapering them. Diaper change time is now fun time. They love the feel of the soft cloth against their skin, and also the feel of their mother's skin against theirs. For some reason it doesn't feel the same as when I used disposables on them *can't explain*
  6. Cloth diapers are so damn therapeutic!!! They are so cute when worn, you just wanna show their bottoms off all the time! Not to mention when they're all lined for drying, or all stacked up after that! *Nice*
  7. Cloth diapers saved my life! *??!!!* My life has been so boring before this, *seriously*. All I thought about was work. In fact, looking back, I think my work meant everything to me before this. I work long hours being a doctor- oncalls mean I have very little time for my family *even now*. Even my husband and my children came second. But cloth diapers drew me closer to them! Life is not just about work anymore, it's about family- it's about appreciating the moments.
  8. I met so many lovely mommas from all walks of life, through cloth diapering. And I can tell you, they are truly amazing people! I learnt that no matter who you are, what your background is like, at the end of the day, WE ARE ALL THE SAME- we are MOTHERS who just want the best for our children. And through cloth diapering, I learnt the art of BABYWEARING & the amazing mommas who do it! *but that's another long story to share!*
Cloth diapering to me... is a lifetime investment. It is the most precious gift to my children and it has brought out the mother in me. I'm so glad I'm a cloth diapering mom *and I want to win that babywearing gear!*

Thanks a bunch!

Cloth diapers can be cost effective, as long as you don't hoard *yikes!*
