Cloth diapers- I haven't known anything about it until around a year ago, while I was pregnant with my fourth child. It was love at first sight. Many people thought I was crazy, many more laughed at me when I spoke about it. Some even blamed it on the pregnancy hormones!
Did all of that stop me from cloth diapering my children?- NOT A BIT!
You see, there are many things about cloth diapering that people just don't get. I'll tell you some of it, from my own perspective:
- These are not old fashioned cloth diapers- although I have nothing against the old fashion way our grandmothers do it, I have to stress that nowadays, cloth diapers have been 'modernized'. Gone all the sloppy knots, the plastic wraps and the difficulty that comes with it. Now, cloth diapers has gone through a revolution- where technology in textile meets modern sofistication! You'll have to see it to believe it.
- Cloth diapers are the healthier choice for your baby- It's appauling to know that many people are unaware of the toxins contained in disposable diapers (I'm not gonna name them, you can just google them when you're free). Imagine having these toxins seep under your little one's skin into his/her blood stream *don't wanna imagine*. And the skin is the largest organ in the human body *yikes!*
- It can be cost effective in the long run (as long as you don't hoard!)- Yes, many people cringe by the price of a single piece of cloth diaper. RM20-80 for a piece? How's that gonna be cheap? All I have to say back to them is "Hey brother! Do your calculations lah!". Besides, what's wrong with spending just a little more for a good cause?
- It's better for the earth- *sigh* It's just so sad seeing people who just don't give a damn about the earth and pollute as they wish. I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's not that easy to take a breath of fresh air anymore nowadays. The air just stinks most of the time. Many people don't want to make it their resposibility to keep the earth clean, instead, they depend on other people to do it for them. Disposable diapers take ages (some say up to 500 years) to decompose on its own. Imagine all the rubbish we are throwing everyday- this contributes to growth of bacteria & other organisms which get spread though our air and water. We are just making our family and ourselves sicker by the day :(
- It draws you closer to your little ones- This i must admit- I have never felt more like a mom (eventhough I have 4 kids now!), until I started cloth diapering them. Diaper change time is now fun time. They love the feel of the soft cloth against their skin, and also the feel of their mother's skin against theirs. For some reason it doesn't feel the same as when I used disposables on them *can't explain*
- Cloth diapers are so damn therapeutic!!! They are so cute when worn, you just wanna show their bottoms off all the time! Not to mention when they're all lined for drying, or all stacked up after that! *Nice*
- Cloth diapers saved my life! *??!!!* My life has been so boring before this, *seriously*. All I thought about was work. In fact, looking back, I think my work meant everything to me before this. I work long hours being a doctor- oncalls mean I have very little time for my family *even now*. Even my husband and my children came second. But cloth diapers drew me closer to them! Life is not just about work anymore, it's about family- it's about appreciating the moments.
- I met so many lovely mommas from all walks of life, through cloth diapering. And I can tell you, they are truly amazing people! I learnt that no matter who you are, what your background is like, at the end of the day, WE ARE ALL THE SAME- we are MOTHERS who just want the best for our children. And through cloth diapering, I learnt the art of BABYWEARING & the amazing mommas who do it! *but that's another long story to share!*
Thanks a bunch!
